We have two candidates for the post of Vice Commodore, Kathy Kilbey and Paul Hayes.
Kathy and Paul have been requested to publish a mandate setting out what they would do if they were elected as Vice Commodore. We are posting the mandates on the Facebook page, the blog and emailing these to you prior to the AGM, on Saturday, to give everyone an opportunity to consider both nominee’s proposals. We would urge you to give careful consideration to both mandates.
Kevin and I are awaiting Paul’s mandate and once this is available it will be published.

Kathy Kilbey –Why I am Standing for Vice-Commodore of Lydney Yacht Club at AGM 27.10.2013
“My vision for our club
LYC is known throughout the Bristol Channel for its unique location on the Severn, its historic clubhouse, its friendliness and hospitality to other sailors and especially for its Wayfarer and small yacht cruising activities.
I believe that these aspects of the club should be properly planned and developed, in conjunction with organised basic training both onshore and afloat. This would make the club much more attractive to active new sailing members and make us more secure as a club, in these uncertain times.
As well as the foregoing, in my view we should also develop the sailing-linked social membership, successfully started as a trial this year – this will help “feed-in” new active sailing members in due course.
I firmly believe that we should have a club business and development plan (even a very basic one!) rather than just continue to stumble unplanned from project to project. (it is a cliché – but, “fail to plan = plan to fail”!!)
Project Funding; I believe the club must go forward over the next few years and increase its membership, or it will inevitably decline – nothing on this planet stands still! Much preliminary work with LYC officers and RYA development staff has already been done towards applying for funding for major projects – as per the 2012 questionnaire to our membership. In order to qualify for any project funding we need to provide a benefit to the local community as well as to our membership – we can do this by just getting more local people out sailing!
Getting all of our members involved;. Energy and enthusiasm is contagious and as a team working together we can build a really exciting and innovative integrated dinghy and cruiser sailing program for 2013-2014
My Commitment to LYC; I have enthusiastically served on the committee for the last 4 ½ years, the last two as Rear Commodore. During 2010–2013 I have worked in an effective way with key-players both within and outside LYC, and have successfully completed a number of major projects for the club. I have also organised a number of successful LYC events in collaboration with other Clubs and organisations. As Rear Commodore I have contributed some 12 hours per week (more in-season) and expect this to increase as Vice Commodore.
My Sailing CV: Dinghy sailing from the early 1950’s; I then served my “cruising apprenticeship” first in Wayfarers and then in cruising / racing yachts from 25-50 feet LOA. I have cruised and raced the English Channel, Western European, Irish and UK West coasts extensively since the 1960’s – based on The Solent, Channel-Isles, Swansea and Milford-Haven. Over the years I have also skippered a number of large sailing yachts and power vessels on delivery from the UK to the Med. For 14 years I was owner of a 38ft wooden Class II Ocean-racing boat and skippered her in RORC and other international events, competing against the modern racing yachts of that era.
Sailing Certificates: I hold the DOT (now RYA) Yacht-master Offshore (1980) and I.C.C (1990) – 80 tons, power and sail qualifications, as well as VHF, First Aid, Coastal skipper, Advanced Tidal Dinghy certs. (etc etc etc). Elected in 1992 to the Royal Ocean Racing Club (after qualifying by skippering in the Fastnet race)
Current boat / sailing plans: Hunter 701 ¼ ton cruiser-racer, now nearing completion of a full restoration. I intend to compete in some offshore events (hopefully with a Lydney crew). I also plan to compete in the Fastnet Race of 2015 skippering a classic Buchanan 38, as a birthday treat!
Career CV: Graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1968 and then lectured in engineering subjects in UK Technical Colleges prior to working in the Middle-East offshore oil Industry. In 1984, graduated in Naval Architecture and became a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (MRINA). Since 1989 I have specialised in surveying large wooden (and GRP) yachts – along with some property, financial and internet business interests. I’m now retired except for my club and marine activities.
